Media is defined as communicating in large groups through voice or device. Exploring media as a part of culture will lead us to think of media as the place where language and technology combine.
As cultures have developed, technology evolves as well. In the fourteen hundreds, Gutttenburg developed a way to quickly print books. This event changed the world. A person could now share a lifetime's worth of knowledge and emotion. This information could be shared with readers across time and across space. In the eighteen hundreds, Samuel Morse developed a language and method to send information in an electric wire. This telegraph again revolutionized the planet. It allowed governments and people to become connected to events across the country. By the end of the same century, Alexander Graham Bell's telephone again changed the way that people shared their culture. This time by allowing one's actual voice to carry the message. The nineteen hundreds brought the addition of radio, television, cellular phones, and the internet. What will the next century bring? Today, mass communication serves a great purpose in our lives, it helps us communicate to distant relatives, learn about culture, and watch videos from or about people you will never know or meet. The most common use of media is to keep people connected from place to place. Media allows you to buy almost anything online, from food to clothing to even homes which connects it to economy, another universal of culture. Media plays a role in politics. Media continues to evolve. In the early 1980s cell phones were very chunky; they were hard to use and were very inconvenient. Cell phones are both more advanced and sleeker than they were
in the 1980s. They are sleeker and thinner. This is how aesthetic values connects to media. Media is no longer the property of the rich. The average person can share a personal story with a close friend he's actually never met. He can apply for a job, buy a suit, get directions, respond to a complaint, write a complaint, read a novel, read a joke, share religious views, and meet wife all from a device that fits in in the pocket.
